"Lights Out" Box

I can't remember where I originally found this idea, but it works great for kids of all ages. The idea is to create a project box to help pass the time when the power goes out. Start with an empty cardboard box (a shoebox works great) or a large empty can (think coffee, stuffing mix, or powdered drink mixes). Next, cover the box with kraft paper. Let the kids decorate it with crayons, markers, stamps, etc. Once it's decorated, fill it with practical things like a flashlight and small projects like a new coloring book, playdough, etc. -- things that don't require electricity! Next time the power goes out, you'll have a kit of fun stuff ready to go. :)

Blessings,
Christy

This Is A Pretty Cool Idea. My Kids Are Huge Craft Fans... This Will Come In Really Handy In The Winters In Idaho... The Power Goes Out A Lot... We Get A Lot Of Snow!

Sounds like a really cool idea that the kids would enjoy.

Glad you like it! One of the most important aspects of having it actually be effective at keeping your kiddos occupied when you lose power is to have everything in the box be a completely new and fresh toy/game/activity. So you may want to make a new box (or at least refill the old one with new stuff) after each power outage.

Blessings,
Christy
